The satisfying thwack of an arrow hitting its target is a cherished sound for traditional archers. However, the unpleasant twang of the bowstring can be startling to both you and nearby wildlife. String silencers offer a simple solution, dampening vibrations and reducing noise. While commercial options exist, crafting your own paracord string silencers is a cost-effective and durable solution.
Benefits of Paracord Silencers
- Cost-effective: Paracord is readily available and inexpensive compared to pre-made silencers.
- Customization: Experiment with colors and the number of strands for a personal touch and desired level of noise reduction.
- Durable: Paracord’s braided nylon sheath offers water resistance and holds up well to wear and tear.
- Lightweight: Unlike wool or yarn silencers, paracord adds minimal weight, maintaining arrow speed.
Materials
- Paracord (desired color)
- Scissors
- Lighter (optional)
- Serving thread (optional)
- Bowstringer (for re-stringing your bow)
Steps
- Cut the Paracord: Measure and cut 2-3 inch sections of paracord. The length can be adjusted based on your preference and bow size. Aim for a finished silencer that’s slightly longer than the width of your bowstring.
- Extract the Inner Core (Optional): Paracord consists of a braided nylon sheath surrounding a set of inner strands. You can use the entire paracord or remove the inner core for a lighter silencer. To remove it, simply unravel one end of the sheath and carefully pull out the inner strands.
- Prepare the Strands: With the inner core removed (if desired), pinch the bottom of the paracord sheath to hold the strands together. You can use a lighter to carefully singe the ends to prevent fraying further.
Attaching the Paracord String Silencers (Two Methods)
Method 1: Insert and Tie
- Separate Strands: Without removing the inner core, separate a few strands from the main bundle at the bottom of the paracord sheath.
- String Insertion: Locate a space between the strands of your bowstring. Carefully push the separated strands of the paracord sheath into this gap.
- Tying the Sheath: Once inserted, pull the paracord sheath upwards until it sits snug against the bowstring. Using serving thread (optional) or dental floss, tie a secure knot around the base of the sheath to prevent it from slipping.
- Fraying (Optional): You can now fray the sheath strands for additional noise reduction, similar to Method 1.
- Repeat: Repeat steps 2-4 for the other side of the bowstring. This is the method I used to install the silencers to my recurve bow.
Method 2: Loop and Fray
- Loop Formation: While holding the pinched end, thread the paracord sheath under and through the bowstring, creating a loop that encircles the string.
- Fraying the Sheath: Gently pull apart the individual strands of the sheath, creating a fluffy texture. The more you fray, the greater the noise reduction, but it will also become bulkier.
- Repeat: Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other side of the bowstring, placing the silencers at equal distances from the nock (the indentation at the end of the arrow).
Additional Tips
- Experiment with the number of paracord strands used per silencer to find the right balance between noise reduction and bulkiness.
- Ensure the silencers are positioned clear of any arrow nocks to prevent interference.
- Re-string your bow using a bowstringer after attaching the silencers.
- Paracord silencers may need to be replaced periodically as they wear down from use.
By following these steps, you can create effective and affordable paracord string silencers for your traditional bow. Not only will this improve your shooting experience, but it will also help you remain stealthy in the field. Remember, safety is paramount. Always ensure your bow and string are in good condition before use. Now, go forth and enjoy the quieter satisfaction of a well-placed arrow!
